Tonight Fox’s Season 3 of The X Factor continued The Four Chair Challenge with performances by Paulina’s category of the Boys and kicked off a few performances of Simon’s category of the groups.
Who Made The Top 4 Boys category?! Let’s find out with a recap of the performances!
Al Caldron Sings Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe”
We are not sure if we really loved this dub step version of “Call Me Maybe.” However, Caldron definitely has the look of a teenage heartthrob and with some help he can definitely improve his vocals.
What did the judges think of Caldron’s performance?
Kelly Rowland stated: “The vocal started a little shaky, but mellowed out and soared in the middle.”
Demi Lovato said, “You have good energy. At some points it was a little too much and at times it was a little pitchy, but overall it was a good performance.”
Simon Cowell proclaimed, “You’re not the best singer in this competition, but you do have have great charisma and fantastic energy. I think we can make you into a much better singer.”
Paulina Rubio emphasized how she loved his stage presence and look.
Isaiah Alston sings Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love of All”
Unfortunately, this was an all around pitchy performance by young Isaiah Alston. We wish he would’ve chosen a different song to sing!
Kelly said, “You are so adorable. I remember your first audition and remember you just killing it. Today we didn’t really get to enjoy the sweeter parts of your voice.”
Simon stated: “It was very old fashioned and out of tune.”
Paulina said, “You have a powerful voice for that little package.”
Demi discussed how she believed he has a lot of learning to do and is not ready for this competition.
Isiah is ultimately sent home.
Isaac Tauaefa Sings Colbie Caillat’s “Bubbly”
There is no denying that 23-year old football player Isaac has a solid voice, but his performance of Colbie Caillat’s “Bubbly” was a tad on the boring side. We hate to say it, but there was nothing really special about his performance.
Kelly said, “I have to be honest I feel like your performance was a bit karaoke and I feel like you’re uncomfortable on the stage.”
Simon remarked, “I thought you were going to deliver a lot more, instead of delivering a three course meal you delivered a lollipop.”
Ha, interesting analogy by Mr. Simon Cowell!
Paulina ends up sending him home.
Carlos Guevera Sings Bill Withers’s “Ain’t No Sunshine”
Carlos melted our hearts with his first audition when he performed John Mayer’s “Gravity.” Tonight he impressed us again with his performance of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine.”
We gotta say this was a brilliant song choice for Carlos! He did a good job of showcasing his versatile range. Although there were times where he was on the verge of over doing the vocal acrobatics, it will be an easy fix with some coaching by his mentor Paulina.
Ultimately though, we still couldn’t help but fall in love with the mixture of his raspy and silky voice. Oh, and we absolutely adored the falsetto ending to the song!
Kelly said, “I love the way you allow the music to take over you. You nailed it.”
Simon expresses: “I do like the tone of your voice, but there are moments where you lose control.”
Paulina stated: “You have a vocally unique sound and that was a great interpretation of the song.”
Stone Martin Sings Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn”
We are not sure we loved the song choice, but Stone does have a sweet sounding texture to his voice that is quite soothing.
Kelly expressed how she liked Stone’s tone, while Demi said, “that was so much better than your first audition, you just killed it.”
Simon expressed, “You are very robotic when you perform, you just need a little bit of swag.”
HAHA, Did Simon really just use the word “swag?!”
Chase Goehring Sings B.o.B’s “Airplanes”
We loved Chase’s first audition when he sang his own original song, but this performance was just a messy cover of the song.
Kelly said, “So you know what, I don’t know if I necessarily liked you singing that song as much as hearing you sing your original song.”
Demi described his performance as “unnatural,” while Simon stated: “We like you, but I almost wish I didn’t hear that, I just want to go back to your first audition.”
Paulina agreed saying she preferred his first audition, and expressed her admiration in his ability to write his own music.
Tim Olstad sings Miley Cyrus’s “The Climb”
We have to say that although we preferred Tim’s first audition, he still gave an all around great vocal performance.
Kelly said, “I can honestly hear your voice already on the radio. That was a wonderful moment just now.”
Demi stated: “I cannot see him being let go from the competition.”
Paulina expresses how she loved his first audition, but tonight she is not sure if he was special enough.
Carlito Olivero sings Selena’s “Dreaming of You”
We were not the biggest fan of Carlito’s song choice, but he does have quite a beautiful voice.
Kelly said, “You are so humble. I do wish you would have gained more control of the vocal. It felt so shaky, something got the best of you today.”
Simon proclaims, “You did struggle with it, but there is great potential with you.”
Paulina said, “I love your voice, your range, your power and I love your attitude.”
Timmy Thames sings “New Girl in Town”
Overall, Timmy gave a decent performance. He had some special moments and some sloppy moments through out the performance.
Kelly said,“You are so stinkin cute. I must admit I did like your audition much better than your performance tonight, but it did seem like you had a good time up there.”
Demi stated: “I can’t say that I was blown away.”
Simon sang a different tune than the rest of the judges saying, “Out of everyone tonight I think you would be the one I would remember. I think it would be insane to let you go at this point.”
Josh Levi sings Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me”
We were in love with Levi’s first audition when he performed an innovative rendition of Selena Gomez’s “Come And Get It.”
This 14-year-old impressed us again as he put a unique R&B twist on Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”
We just love how he takes a song, changes it up and really makes it his own.
In addition to his great vocals, he’s got amazing stage presence as he incorporated some slick dance moves throughout his performance.
Kelly said, “We are looking at a superstar.”
Demi emphasized, “I feel so overwhelmed by your presence and the crowd’s reaction.”
Simon stated: I wouldn’t have chosen this song, but we are looking at a future star here.”
Paulina said, “Everything that you just did was perfect.”
Ultimately, The Final Four Boys Paulina Chose include: Carlito Olivero, Carlos Guevara, Josh Levi and Tim Olstad.
Now on to the Groups! Only 4 out of the 10 groups performed tonight!
Girls United sing Chris Brown’s “Yeah 3x”
This all girl trio blew us away with their incredible energy and stage presence. Their harmonies were good, but we have to admit it didn’t completely blow us away.
Kelly said, “ Y’all have a wonderful look, I like how y’all took your time and added harmonies.”
Demi described their performance as “on the young side,” but said she does believe they need to be here.
Simon said, “You are well rehearsed. Vocally though I’ve heard a lot better, but there is something commercial about you.”
The group gets the first seat of the night, but will they be able to keep it?
Wild Thingz sing LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem”
This duo’s wild and wacky performance was pretty entertaining. They actually performed a really cool and interesting rendition of the song.
We love how they feed off of each other’s energy.
Kelly said, “You are all the way turned up, it’s too much.”
Paulina said she really liked that performance, while Simon described their performance as “unintentional comedy.”
However, Simon does give the duo a seat for now!
Glamour sings “You’re Gonna Miss Me (Cups Song)” from Pitch Perfect
Girl Group Glamour was not vocally on point compared to their first audition, but we do see the potential and we adored their mini dance routine.
Kelly said, “I wish the vocals were a little bit tighter tonight.”
Demi expressed, “You sounded great, but I do wonder if you are ready for this right now.”
Simon explained how he preferred their first audition.
Nevertheless, Simon ends up giving them a seat for now.
Restless Road Sings Keith Urban’s “Somebody Like You”
We love this country trio! With a little polishing up on their harmonies, we can see them being huge country stars.
Kelly said, “You guys are such an incredible trio, this was a brilliant idea.”
Paulina stated: “I love you three, your different vocals blend so well and you guys are amazing.”
Demi proclaimed, “I am so excited right now. I got the chills because it was so right. I hate to say this, but Simon is a genius for putting you guys together.”
Simon gives the country trio a seat!
Well, we will have to wait till tomorrow to see which groups will make it into the final four!
Who was your favorite performance tonight? Do you think the right boys made the final four?! Leave your thoughts below!
