Will T-Mobile Eliminate Phone Contracts This Month?

Image courtesy of T-MobileAccording to TmoNews.com, T-Mobile may be eliminating contract-based service plans as early as March 24th of this year. The changes may be announced as early as Monday, March 4th.

If T-Mobile decides to follow through with the reported changes, their service will fully switch to their Value plan.

Existing customers will be required to finish out their current contracts. Another scenario for existing customers would be to upgrade to a new device without starting a new contract.

In addition, early termination fees will no longer be charged – which makes sense since contracts are being eliminated.

Another thing to keep an eye out for is more reasonable options for buying smartphones. T-Mobile has plans to make down payments on smartphones $99 or less. This change is associated with a new device installment plan. It would most likely be within $25 – $30 per month.

In late December, T-Mobile began to call itself the “un-carrier,” when the company announced that it would begin selling Apple products, and eliminate contract-based service plans.

“You love your iPhone, but you hate AT&T,” T-Mobile told analysts in December. The choice to sell Apple products and eliminate contract-based service plans was made to distinguish the company from competitors such as AT&T and Verizon.

Details about tech rumors tend to change at the drop of the hat, so that’s something to keep in mind with all of this information.

Do you think that this is a bold move for T-Mobile, or a big mistake?

Would you be more likely to use a cell phone carrier if they didn’t require you to sign a contract?
