Tony Curtis, one of the biggest movie stars of the 50’s and 60’s, died Wednesday evening. He was at his Las Vegas area home when he had a heart attack. He was 85 years old.
Not generally considered a great actor, Curtis still managed to star in many classic movies. He was well known for his good looks, dynamic personality, being a hard worker, and for the dedication he brought to the roles he played.
Curtis had appearances in more than 120 movies. Some of his more famous roles included “Sweet Smell of Success” in 1957; “The Defiant Ones”, in 1958; “Some Like It Hot’ in 1959; and “Spartacus”, in 1960.
He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in “The Defiant Ones”.
Curtis had five marriages over the course of his life. His first wife, actress Janet Leigh, is well known for her role in “Psycho”. They were married in 1951, and divorced in 1962. They had two children, actresses Kelly Curtis and Jamie Lee Curtis. He was also married to Leslie Allen (1968 to 1982); Andria Savio (1983 to 1992); Lisa Deutsch (1993 to 1994); and Jill Vandenberg Curtis (1998 until his death).
He is survived by his wife, Jill, daughters Kelly, Jamie Lee (from his marriage with Janet Leigh) Alexandra and Allegra (from his marriage to Christine Kaufmann) a son, Benjamin (from his marriage to Leslie Allen) and six grandchildren. Another son, Nicholas, which he had with his second wife, Leslie Allen, died in 1994 of a drug overdose.
