Thor Hammers Through The Box Office

The market for superhero movies remains solid as Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures raked in $66 million in its opening weekend in North America. But before that Thor was released earlier in 56 foreign markets and made over $100 million in ticket sales.

Marvel is reported to have spent $150 million to make the film, which means studio executives are very happy with Thor’s overall performance over the weekend. The film could also had help from its 2 Oscar award winning co-stars, veteran actor Anthony Hopkins and this years best actress, Natalie Portman.

Chris Hemsworth also stirred the curiosity among movie goers as it was reported that he built up too much muscle and did not fit inside his costume, which ended up being remade. Nevertheless, Hemsworth earned alot in this movie: a great physique and a great payday.

Comparing to previous Marvel films, Thor did not fair well against Iron Man, which generated close to $99 million in its debut.

Iron Man 2 and Thor were supposed to be released in 2010, but after the success of the first Iron Man film, Marvel Studios decided to move Thor to 2011 as they concluded that Iron Man 2 will give them their much needed revenue for the summer of 2010.
