‘The Lion King 3D’ Tops The Box Office Earning $29.3 Million [Video]

Disney’s “The Lion King 3D” has topped this weekend’s box office, earning a whopping $29.3 million this weekend, almost as much as “Contagion,” “Drive,” and “The Help” combined!

“Contagion” grossed nearly $14.5 million in its second week, “Drive” grossed over $11 million in its first week, and “The Help,” which is in its six week, grossed over $6.4 million.

The original version of “The Lion King” earned $312.9 million in total, becoming the highest-grossing animated film in box office history before Pixar came along and stole the crown. The film also earned another $15.7 million during an IMAX re-release in 2002, and now another massive $29.3 million during the first weekend of its short two-week run.

According to The-Numbers, “The Lion King” has earned $1.5 billion in home market revenue from video sales and rentals. After its profitable weekend, that number is expected to grow even more.

92 percent of “The Lion King 3D’s” gross came from 3-D screens, earning an average $12,575 per theater.

88 percent of critics and 89 percent of audience members seemed to have really enjoyed “The Lion King 3D,” according to statistics on Rotten Tomatoes’ website.

“The Lion King 3D” will be released on Blu-ray 3D on October 4th.
