Similac Baby Formula Recalled For Bugs

Abbott Labs has announced a voluntary recall of some Similac brand powdered infant formula today. The formula may contain bugs. It was sold in the U.S., Puerto Rico , Guam and some Caribbean countries.

During a quality inspection, it was discovered that the formula may be contaminated with small beetles. The formula is produced at a manufacturing facility owned by Abbott.

According to the FDA, consumption of the formula will not cause any major health problems, but ingestion of the beetles or larvae could cause some gastrointestinal issues like upset stomach. A baby may refuse foods after having had the formula.

The recall does not pertain to any liquid formula. It only applies to powder based products.

The recall includes some Similac powder product lines that come in plastic containers, and some Similac powder product lines in 8, 12.4 and 12.9 ounce cans.

To see if a product has been included in the recall consumers can visit www.similac.com/recall and check their lot number. Consumers can also call (800) 986-8850.

Any products affected by the recall can be returned to Abbott at no charge to the customer. Consumers can call the number above for information regarding the return of their formula.
