Ruben Navarrette Jr. Says Arizona Is A “…Bastion Of Unbridled Racism And Discrimination”

Following the statement from Pima County sheriff, Clarence Dupnik, Ruben Navarrette Jr. spoke out on CNN. Agreeing with Dupnik on the violent rhetoric we hear every day on the streets, radio and TV, he mentioned Dupnik’s statement that included the following remarks. “The bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous. ..And unfortunately, Arizona, I think, has become sort of the capital. We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry.”

Navarrette commented, “Bingo. Take it from me. I lived in Phoenix in the late 199o’s while writing for the Arizona Republic. Dupnik got it exactly right.” He went on to say that say the drama capital of Arizona, “seems to spend more time on the front page than the other 49 states combined.”

Paraphrasing singer Phil Ochs,  about Mississippi in the 60’s, Navarrette’s version goes- “Here’s to the people you’ve torn out of the heart of Arizona; find yourself another country to be part of.” Navarrette believes Arizona has been malfunctioning for years.

He further went on to say Arizona is “a  Southwestern bastion of unbridled racism and discrimination. Restaurants had signs in the window that read “No dogs or Mexicans” allowed.

With Dupnik’s statements, Navarrette agrees the bigotry is back with a vengeance.  He ended with, “This is where Arizona is headed now that it has removed the stigma from extremism and has sanctioned narrow-mindedness.”
