With J.J. Abrams and company hard at work on Star Wars: Episode VII, plans are already being made for Star Wars: Episode VIII, and those plans involve Rian Johnson writing and directing the next installment of the Star Wars saga.
According to Deadline, Johnson is in the final stages of talks to become the writer and director of Episode VIII. There is also a report indicating that Johnson will also write and direct Episode IX, although there is a conflicting report that he will only write the script for Episode IX, but not direct it.
Johnson is one of the top up-and-coming writers and directors, making his feature debut directing Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the 2005 indie noir flick Brick. He followed that up in 2008 with The Brothers Bloom, and his latest project was writing and directing Looper in 2012. Johnson has also directed three episodes of Breaking Bad.
There is no scheduled release date for Episode VIII, but Star Wars: Episode VII, which is currently filming under the direction of Abrams, will be in theaters December 18, 2015.
What do you think of Johnson directing Star Wars: Episode VIII? Is he a good fit, or would you prefer to see Abrams do the final three films? Let us know below.
