Pokemon Rumble U – Nintendo’s Answer To NFC Games

Nintendo announced that their first near-field communication (NFC) game for Wii U will be a Pokemon game titled: Pokemon Rumble U.

Near-field communication games use actual figures to store gaming information, then players can bring such figures with them to play on friends’ consoles.

The game has only been announced for Japanese markets right now.

The first set of figures will include Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Piplup, Lucario, Victini and Torchic.  Since it’s the “first” set, we can only assume that there will be more figures in the near future.

Pokemon Rumble U will be released in the Japanese Wii U eShop on April 24th for 1,800 yen (about $18~$20) and the figures will be 200 yen each ($2~$3)

Similar technology is already being used on Activison’s Skylanders franchise, which has sold over $1 billion at retail so far.

Now that both Disney and Nintendo are taking similar approach, it will be interesting to see who will eventually develop the flagship NFC game.
