“Please Don’t Be Mad At Me” Writes Tucson Gunman

The Tucson, Arizona, gunman responsible for shooting 10-12 people today at a Safeway grocery store posted the message, “Goodbye friends…please don’t be mad at me,” according to the Associated Press.

The cause for the shooting is still unknown, reported Dina Temple-Raston of NPR.

The gunman who shot Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords today also killed Federal Judge, John McCarthy Roll who was a Bush nominee to the U.S. District Court in 1991 and had been Chief Judge since 2006. It is also reported that a nine year old girl died.  According to NPR who has monitored the situation closely, up to six people have died.

Tackled at the scene by one of the bystanders and held, the gunman was quickly whisked away by police. He was identified by police as Jared Lee Loughner, 22.  Also whisked away was the MySpace page done by Loughner that had the message mentioned above on it.

Gabrielle Giffords suffered a wound to the head that was called a “through and through” which meant it struck her in the brain and kept going instead of breaking apart and doing even more serious damage. The doctors are optimistic she will recover. She had been reported dead earlier by such well known news sources as NPR, Reuters and CNN, but that story was soon retracted.

President Obama, in a speech to the nation said the shooting was “a tragedy for Arizona and a tragedy for our entire country.”
