Paintshop Photo Pro X3 (+ 2 Other Programs) – Free This Week At Fry’s

Paintshop Photo Pro X3, the photo editing software from Corel, normally sold for $60, is being offered for free (after rebates) at Fry’s Electronics this week.

The deal from Fry’s is good through July 28th. Paintshop Photo Pro X3 must be purchased up front for $60, and then two rebates would be mailed in to fulfill the requirements of the rebate offer. One is a standard mail in rebate for $40 back. The second rebate is a competitive upgrade rebate for $20. To qualify for the competitive product rebate, the user must already own a copy of Adobe Photoshop or Elements, Microsoft Digital Image Pro, Digital Image Suite or PictureIt, Ulead/Nova PhotoImpact, Nova Photo Explosion, Roxio/MGI PhotoSuite, or Magix Digital PhotoMaker. Rebates must be mailed in within 30 days of purchase, according to Fry’s.

Paintshop Photo Pro X3 has come under criticism from users of it’s predecessor, Paint Shop Pro. Paint Shop Pro was originally developed by Jasc Software, but Corel bought the program in 2004. PPP X3 is the first version to support Windows 7, but many users have complained in reviews of difficult and time consuming installs, difficult navigation menus, stalls and crashes. Amazon users have rated it 3 out of 5, with 156 users providing feedback. 33 rated the program 5 stars, 51 rated it 1 star.

Fry’s has two other programs also free, after rebates, this week.

One is Kaspersky Antivirus, which is $50 up front, but comes with two mail-in rebates worth a total of $50 (one of which is also a competitive upgrade rebate requiring the prior ownership of either an earlier version of Kaspersky or a competing program).

The other is Trend Micro’s Titanium Internet Security software. The in-store price is $40, and it comes with a $40 mail in rebate – no ‘competitive upgrade’ restrictions on this one.

Like Paintshop Photo Pro X3, these rebates are available on purchases placed before July 28th and the rebates must be postmarked within 30 days of purchase, according to the fine print. Fry’s website is at frys.com.
