North Korea Bombs South Korea In Unexpected Attack

Monday at 2:34 pm, North Korea unexpectedly bombed South Korea on the island of Yongpyong Doe.

The island sits near the border and has a population of 1,500 people. There were two south Korean marines killed and 15 soldiers and 3 civilians wounded in the attack.

North Korea fired 100 rounds of artillery at the island which caused houses and forests to catch fire. The incident is labeled as the first direct attack since the Korean War ended.

South Korea responded with 80 rounds of artillery and the deployment of fighter jets. The firing between both sides over the Yellow Sea lasted nearly an hour.

South Korea’s president has said that retaliation is needed for this attack, but international diplomats are urging for restraint.

The U.S. has condemned the attack and is calling upon North Korea to halt their actions. There are currently 25,000 U.S. troops stationed in South Korea. While they are watching the situation, no changes have been made in their daily activities.
