Nintendo Wii’s Price To Drop Soon?

Nintendo Wii’s retail price is to drop from $199 to $150 on May 15th.  Or at least that is what one well known tech site, Engadget, is reporting.

Engadget said they are basing their report on the word of a “trusted source,” combined with an interview given by Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, to Gamasutra, the free online version of Game Developer Magazine.

In the Gamasutra interview,  Fils-Aime “hinted that the Wii’s price might be a potential variable to change” said Engadget. However, even Engadget put a question mark on the end of their statement about the price cut – and points out that it would be odd for a company like Nintendo to leak a major announcement like this a month ahead of time.

However, the last time the Nintendo Wii had a price cut, it happened in a similar manner. During the Fall of 2009, there were rumors, scanned images of leaked advertisments with the lower price, and some intrigue… before Nintendo finally confirmed the price cut, from $249 to $199, at that time. And when it was confirmed, it wasn’t through a big gaming event. It was done on a conference call with retailers.

Though there are reports of Wii sales declining over the last year, it still leads the market overall. According to PC Magazine, 34.5 million Wiis have been sold in the US. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is in second place for sales, with 25.8 million sold, and Sony’s PlayStation is in third, with 15.7 million sold.
