NFL Chicago Bears Sign Brandon Meriweather: Was It A Bad Move?

On Sunday, the Chicago Bears “agreed to terms” with the former Patriots’ two-time Pro Bowl safety Brandon Meriweather. The Bears signed Meriweather the day after the New England Patriots cut him.

Meriweather has played in all 67 of the Patriots’ football games during his four seasons in New England. With 12 interceptions in the previous three seasons, Meriweather has scored the fourth most by a safety in the NFL in that timespan.

Meriweather also comes with some red flags that might not work in the Bears’ favor:

– He is an inconsistent player who likes to gamble. He makes big plays, but also makes big mistakes.

– He was cut by Bill Belichick, who has a strong knowledge of NFL talent.

– The Patriots were unable to trade him, despite the fact Meriweather has been named to the Pro Bowl twice.

– He was suspended for a game for his role in the Miami-Florida International brawl in 2006 when he was a member of the Miami Hurricanes.

– Last year Meriweather was fine $40,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Todd Heap of the Ravens, which left Heap with a concussion.

The Bears will also have to cut a player from their 53-man roster to make room for the notorious Meriweather.

All in all, Meriweather’s success with the Bears can only be determined on the field.
