New iPad Revealed: The New Name? “iPad”

Well, there was one big surprise during Apple’s reveal of their new iPad 3. It’s not called an iPad 3. Apparently it’s just just going to be called an iPad.

That may lead to a bit of confusion. But it’s not unprecedented, other Apple products, like the Mac are not versioned by number. Still, it’s going to be a bit odd to have comparisons made between the iPad 2 and the iPad, with the iPad being the newer version. It would not surprise us if the new iPad continues to be referred to as an iPad 3 just for clarity’s sake.

But the name was pretty much the only big surprise. Otherwise the leaks pretty much rang true. Details are still coming in, but as we expected, the iPad will have a very similar body and be the same size as the iPad 2. It will have a high definition touchscreen called a retina display, with a resolution of 2,048 by 1,536. There is a dual-core processor in the tablet (many had hoped for a quad-core). There will be 4G support, and updated software.

The new iPad will show up in stores starting March 16.
