Alibaba, the largest e-commerce company in China, just unveiled its cloud-based Aliyun operating system for mobile devices. Poised to take advantage of the growing Chinese 3G mobile market (now 80 million strong), the brand new operating system will be compatible with Android-based applications as well as offer its own Cloud OS-based applications.
To help spur development, third-party developers can either develop cloud applications they host on their own servers or on the AliCloud’s infrastructure for a low cost. With the cloud OS being fully compatible with Android-applications, the platform’s flexibility shows potential for quick market growth.
The K-Touch Cloud-Smart Phone W700 was also unveiled – the first cloud OS powered mobile phone. The W700 pone will be introduced to the Chinese market at the end of July. Plans are to integrate the Aliyun cloud-based OS with other devices including other mobile phones with larger screen and tablet computers over the next couple of months.
