Netflix To Lose Starz Movies On Wednesday

On Wednesday Netflix will lose about 1000 movies and TV shows when its contract with Starz ends.

The contract expiration was first announced last September. Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht said at the time that:

“This decision is a result of our strategy to protect the premium nature of our brand by preserving the appropriate pricing and packaging of our exclusive and highly valuable content.  With our current studio rights and growing original programming presence, the network is in an excellent position to evaluate new opportunities and expand its overall business.”

The loss of Starz will hurt the selection of movies and shows available through Netflix. Some of the movies available in the Netflix ‘Starz Play’ section currently include such popular titles as ‘Tangled,’ ‘Toy Story 3,’ ‘Tron,’ ‘Peter Pan,’ ‘Secretariat,’ ‘Elizabeth,’ and  ‘Twister.’

Last June, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said that Starz accounted for 8% of Netflix users viewing time.

Netflix has been battered from all sides over the last year. First they beat themselves up with a bungled price change/increase. Since then they have experienced increased competition from Amazon, Hulu Plus, Blockbuster and soon, Redbox and Comcast. Now they are losing of a chunk of movies and shows.

It’s hard to predict the fallout of this and other changes going on within the streaming industry. It’s changing and evolving quickly. One thing is certain, more choices are becoming available to shoppers. We’ll just have to wait and see which of these services pulls out ahead of the others over time with the most content and best quality for the lowest price.
