Memorial Day 2011 On TV – Events, Specials, Movies

Several Memorial Day 2011 specials and observances will be on TV both today and Monday.

The “National Memorial Day Concert” will be Sunday night at 8pm (ET) on PBS. The concert will be shown live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. It is hosted by Gary Sinise and Joe Mantegna, two actors who have both supported organizations that help veterans and troops in the field.  The show will open with a special tribute to those who died or lost loved ones in the Sept 11, 2001 terrorism attacks here in the US. It will also honor all service members, past and present, and those who have died for the freedoms and safety we now enjoy in the US.

On Monday, there will be the National Memorial Day Observance at Arlington National Cemetery. US flags have been set up to decorate the more than 250,000 graves at the cemetery. The US Marine Band will start the ceremony in the amphetheater at 10:30am. The Wreath-Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns is scheduled for 11am, with President Obama participating in the event. While none of the major networks have announced coverage or have any specials planned around it, the Wreath-Laying Ceremony is expected to be covered on the 24-hour news networks, Fox News and CNN.

Several networks will be showing war based flicks on Sunday. AMC has ‘Fixed Baynets’ at 6:30am, followed by ‘MacArthur’ (8:30am), ‘The Great Raid’ (11:30am), ‘Apocalypse Now Redux’ (2:30pm) and  ‘Pearl Harbor’ (7pm).
