Macy’s Ups the Ante: Is 48 Hours Of Shopping Really What We Need?

Macy'sMacy’s announced today that many of it’s department stores will be open for 48 hours straight on the weekend before Christmas.  This is unprecedented.

According to a press release by Macy’s, beginning on Friday, December 21 at 7 AM all the way until Sunday, December 23 at 7 AM, Macy’s stores nationwide will be open for your last minute shopping needs – anytime of the day or night.

In addition, the company reports that 57 locations will be open late into the night on Christmas Eve.

Last minute gifts have played a bigger role in business in recent years.  This latest move by Macy’s is surely targeted at making their stores available for last minute gift purchases.

Macy’s says that, “One Day Sale offers will conclude at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23, Macy’s stores will stay open for business for the remainder of the day – most until midnight.”  The company plans on featuring gift items in groups such as “gifts under $100, $50, and $25” to help shoppers who need some suggestions for gifts.

What do you think?  Is this 48 hours of shopping making the season too focused on material goods?  Or is it just making it easier for last-minute shoppers?
