We know the next lead actor of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim 2: Star Wars’ own, John Boyega.
Boyega announced today, via social media, that his production company, UpperRoom Productions, will partner with Legendary Pictures, to begin pre-production and principal photography for the next installment of the big-budget, giant monster-movie franchise. In Boyega’s statement, he writes: “I’ll be taking on the Pacific Rim franchise! I’m excited to be working with Legendary pictures and Steven McKnight. My company UpperRoom Productions founded by myself & @MrFemiOguns, will co-produce #PacificRim2 alongside Legendary.
For me, this collaboration couldn’t be a better way to get UpperRoom started. It brings an invigorating feeling to know that I get to participate in the telling of a remarkable story from more than one angle. Big love to all X”
Deadline elaborated on the story further, mentioning not only Boyega’s production company, but also that the 24 year-old British actor is slated to play the lead role in the upcoming film, presumably replacing the previous main character, played by Charlie Hunnam. Boyega, according to Deadline, will play the son of Idris Elba’s character from the first film, Stacker Pentecost.
Before landing the eponymous role of Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Boyega played roles in smaller films such as Attack The Block, and TV roles like Law & Order: UK.
There are not many details about the sequel, but the story is expected to focus on the origins of the Kaiju. While the official release date for the film has not been locked, it is scheduled for August 4th, 2017.
