iPad Vs Sony S1, Sony Aims For 2nd Place

Yesterday, Sony unveiled its new tablet computer in Tokyo. The new tablet, dubbed “S1,” is being designed to be a strong competitor with the Apple iPad.

S1 features a touchpad on a 9.4 inch display. It runs on the Android 3.0 operating system and is set up to run online content like e-books, movies, and video games. Consumers can also use it for social networking and email. Upon release, the S1 will connect with Sony’s cloud library of music, movies, and PlayStation video games that run on Android.

Sony is also releasing a smaller version, the S2, which also runs on Android 3.0 and features two 5.5 inch displays. The S2 folds like a book and is designed to be more portable.

Sony has not released the prices of either the S1 or the S2. However, Kunimasa Suzuki, Sony’s senior vice president, stated that both would be competitively priced. While Sony doesn’t expect to surpass Apple’s domination of the tablet world, Suzuki said that Sony is hoping for strong competition in the number 2 slot. Apple currently holds 64% off the tablet market, according to a recent Goldman Sachs report.

Sony expects to release the S1 and the S2 globally in September.
