Infant Bed-Side Sleepers Recalled After Falls, Entrapments

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Arm’s Reach Concepts Inc., announced a recall yesterday of Arm’s Reach Concepts Infant Bed-Side Sleepers.

The Infant Bed-Side Sleepers look like regular playpen or a portable crib. However, one side is lower so the sleeper can be placed next to an adult bed for easy access to the infant. It has been found that that when the fabric liner is not attached correctly, or not used at all, infants can fall from the mattress onto the fabric at the bottom of the sleeper, or can get trapped between the side of the sleeper and the mattress. This poses a risk of suffocation.

CPSC and Arm’s Reach Concepts say they have received reports of 10 infants that have fallen to the bottom section or became entrapped between the mattress and the side. No injuries have been reported.

According to the MontrealGazzette.com, Canadian authorities have been aware of this issue for years. Health Canada is reported to have told Arm’s Reach Concepts several years ago that the sleeper did not meet Canada’s safety guidelines for cribs. However, the sleeper was not recalled at that time.

The recall involves both the Arm’s Reach Original and Universal Infant Bed-Side Sleepers styles. The manufacture dates, which are on a sticker on one of the sleepers legs, are between September 1997 and December 2001. Model numbers are also located on that sticker, according to the announcement. The affected model numbers are 8108, 8133, 8111, 8112 and 8199 for the Original style. For the Universal model, number 8311.

Approximately 76,000 of the recalled sleepers were sold, mostly in the US, through Burlington Coat Factory, Babies R Us and other retail stores, from September 1997 through December 2001. About 1100 of them were sold in Canada.

Owners are being asked by the CPSC to immediately stop using these sleepers and to visit www.armsreach.com/instructions for proper assembly instructions and additional information.
