Memorial weekend kicks off with the Sheepshead Bay Stakes race. Sheepshead Bay comes with a $150,000 purse for the winner.
Sheepshead Bay will be run today at Belmont Park in New York. Some likely contenders are ready to race in today’s third leg of a pick-four wager with a guaranteed pool of $300,000.
Among those contenders is Hibaayeb, the English import who rocked Southern California’s world 8 months ago. Hibaayeb won the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon at Hollywood Park, an upset for her Western-American opponents. Now, she will attempt to cause the same upset for America’s East-coast ladies at the Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay stakes. Hibaayeb is owned by Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin Stable.
Hibaayeb will break from the #2 post carrying jockey John Velazquez.
Christophe Clement has 3 entries in Sheepshead Bay. Cheetah, Tarrip, and Giants Play will run against each other. Cheetah won that race, while Giants Play and Tarrip finished in third and fourth places, running just a nose apart in the Grade 3 Orchid at Gulfstream Park.
Other contenders for Sheepshead Bay include Belle Watling and Choice Play. Both of these fillies are owned by Flying Zee Stable.
Sheepshead Bay will run as the 9th race in the 10 race program at Belmont Park today.
