Google Buzz Closes Shop

Google Buzz, Google’s first attempt at a social media site, is being closed down.

Looking back, Google Vice President Bradley Horowitz considered Google Buzz a learning experience, saying on a blog post that “We learned a lot from products like Buzz and are putting that learning to work every day in our vision for products like Google+.”

Horowitz wrote that existing Google Buzz users will not be able to create new posts after the service is shut down, but will be able to access their existing content through their profile page.

Google Buzz was launched early in 2010. The site had trouble attracting users from the beginning, and privacy concerns were raised almost immediately. Many expected a service that could complete with Facebook, but Google Buzz never materialized as a strong competitor.

Google’s second attempt at a social media site was Google+, which experienced a much more receptive launch. Just weeks after it launched, more than 10 million viewers signed up. Earlier this month, Google co-founder Larry Page revealed that Google+ now has 40 million users.

Google is in the process of a spring-cleaning of sorts. They have recently announced their intention to close down Google Code Search, Jaiku, and the University Research Program for Google Search.
