Free cell phone service?
It sounds rather unbelievable, but there’s a company planing on offering just that – and they have a proven record of bringing free services to consumers.
The company is called FreedomPop.
FreedomPop currently offers free high speed internet service to the public. I use the service myself when I am traveling.
It’s limited, just short of a half a gigabyte of free data each a month. But that’s plenty enough for my email needs when I’m on the road. A larger amount of data is available through their paid subscription plans.
FreedomPop’s new free cell phone service will be limited too – but not as much as you might think. It will include 200 minutes of talk time, 500MBs of free 4G data, unlimited text messaging, and unlimited talk time between FreedomPop users. Paid plans will also be available.
The service will be available nationwide on Sprint’s 3G and 4G networks.
Tony Miller, Head of Marketing and Communications for FreedomPop, told News For Shoppers that the free cell service will work on any Android based Sprint phone, whether locked or unlocked.
Miller also said that FreedomPop will also offer the HTC EVO directly when the service launches. Other devices will be added to their catalog over time.
As for when the free cell phone service will be available?
“Late summer” was all we could get.
FreedomPop does provide a form on their site for signing up for launch update alerts. Miller said that initial beta-testers will be selected from those that sign up.
