The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), on March 30, issued a notice of a voluntary recall by Nutrition Express regarding a batch of protein supplements potentially laced with salmonella.
Salmonella can cause serious illness and potentially death in young children, elderly adults, and those with weak immune systems. Salmonella often causes fever. diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting in healthy people. If it gets into the bloodstream, it can cause arterial infections, arthritis, and endocarditis.
The products being recalled are a batch that was sold between December 1, 2010 and February 17, 2011 to specific retail stores and directly to consumers from the company. Consumers were notified of the recall immediately.
The recall has been issued in response to a recall issued by the company’s supplier of whey protein, a dairy in Minnesota. While no traces of salmonella have been found in over 20 tests on finished products conducted by an independent laboratory, Nutrition Express has issued their recall as a precautionary measure and are urging consumers to return the product for replacement with a ingredients from a different dairy or refund with or without a receipt.
Specifically, the products in question are the Fitness Labs and Lindberg brands packaged in white plastic bottle with colored labels and black lids. Amounts may be between 5 ounces and 5 pounds. The types includes Protein Blend Vanilla, the MuscleFit line, the NutraFit line, the WheyFit Protein line, and the WheyFit Isolate line. Specific lot numbers and flavors can be found at fda.gov.
