Democrats Plan To Use Social Security Against Republicans

Democrats vs. RepublicansSocial Security has been a long standing battle between Democrats and Republicans. With elections looming, this year will be no different. On Friday, Democrats made a pledge to keep the program in place, and they plan to use that pledge against the Republicans.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine said that it is critical to elect those who will stand with the President to protect Social Security. He added that Obama and Democrats are dedicated to preserving the program, and that they oppose privatization.

Many Republicans have disliked the program since its inception, and some, such as President George Bush, have tried to privatize it. Those attempts failed.

James Roosevelt Jr, grandson of FDR, spoke Friday about his grandfather’s views of the program. He labeled it the most successful government program the country had and ever will ever see.  He reminded those listening that Social Security is part of his grandfather’s legacy, in the same way that universal health care will be part of President Obama’s.

John Boehner, the House Minority leader, said that the program needs reform, or future benefits would be threatened. He also stated that Republicans are “committed to protecting Social Security and preserving this invaluable program for current and future generations”.

Boehner came under fire in June for suggesting an increase in the retirement age to 70 years old.

Both sides know how important seniors are on election day. That age group goes to polls in higher numbers than any other.
