Crib Recall Re-Issued After 7-Month Old Dies

Almost a million cribs are the subject of a re-issued recall announcement.

985,000 drop-side cribs with “Crib Trigger Lock and Safety Peg” hardware, made by Delta Enterprise Corp., of New York, N.Y., were recalled in 2008 after an 8 month old girl died. She had become trapped and suffocated when the drop-down side of the crib detached. It was found in this incident that the crib had been re-assembled without the needed safety pegs in the bottom racks.

The 2008 recall said that when the safety pegs were not in place, the drop-side railing could become disengaged. which could cause a space in which an infant could be trapped and suffocate. At that time, they said that there had been reports of nine detachments and two entrapments when the safety pegs had not been installed during re-assembly.

The recall was re-issued after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Delta found out that a 7 month old girl died of suffocation in 2009 after she became trapped in one of the recalled cribs. That crib had been sold second hand and then re-assembled, without the safety pegs.

The recalled cribs were made in Taiwan and Indonesia, and sold at major retail stores including Kmart, Target and Walmart between January 1995 and December 2005 (through September 2007 for model 4624) for approxamately $100.

49 models of cribs with the “Crib Trigger Lock with Safety Peg” hardware are included in the recall. The model numbers, which can be found on the top of the mattress support board, are:

• 4320, 4340;
