Blizzard Grinding Flights To A Halt – Latest Update

As of 6:30 pm ET this evening, airlines are canceling flights across the country as a cold and icy winter storm grips large portions the eastern US.

According to USAToday.com, New York airports have cancelled more than 800 flights so far, and that figure is expected to rise rapidly. NY is expecting to experience heavy winds and up to 16 inches of snow this evening. Blizzard warnings are in affect.

The storm is affecting locations as far away as Los Angeles, where Harold Johnson, spokesman for LAX, spoke to the LA Times and said that Delta Airlines cancelled all flights to JFK airport. American Airlines cancelled 15 flights – and United cancelled 6, to the cities of Boston, New York, Newark and Washington, D.C. Jet Blue has a large slew of cancelled flights.

More flights are expected to be cancelled as the evening wears on.

Due to the storm, JetBlue has said they will waive change fees and fare differences on a limited basis to allow flyers to rebook for new flights.

Delta is providing updates through their messaging service: www.delta.com/traveling_checkin/flight_status_updates/flight_notifications/index.jsp

US Airways has also announced that they are waiving change fees for those affected by the storm (limited, check with airline for details).

SouthWest Airlines is also offering flexible accommodations to their flyers affected by the blizzard.

Airlines are asking customers to contact them regarding the status of individual flights.
