Black Friday/Holiday Spending Online – Way Up This Year

According to a recent survey by the online research firm comScore, Black Friday and holiday spending online has taken a big jump this year.

According to their research, online spending on Black Friday leaped 26% over last year. While $648 million dollars was spent online in the retail (non-travel) category during Black Friday of 2010, $816 million was spent online this year.

Spending on Thanksgiving day was also higher this year than last. comScore said that $407 million was spent on Thanksgiving day last year, $479 million this year, an increase of 18%.

Comparing online spending from November 1 to 25, 2010, to those same dates in 2011, also saw an increase. From 11 billion to about 12.7 billion this year, an increase of 15%.

Gian Fulgoni, chairman of comScore, said that some analyst predicted that the earlier Black Friday opening hours which many brick and mortar stores had this year may cut into online sales, but that wasn’t the case.

““With brick-and-mortar retail also reporting strong gains on Black Friday, it’s clear that the heavy promotional activity had a positive impact on both channels. We now turn our attention to Cyber Monday, a day that Shop.org says will see eight-in-ten retailers running special online promotions. Last year, Cyber Monday was the heaviest day of online spending ever, with sales exceeding $1 Billion, and we fully expect to see another record set this year,” Fulgoni said in a statement.
