Apple revealed the long awaited App Store subscription service on Tuesday, allowing recurring billing for publishers of apps for all iOS Apple devices. External links for purchasing are not going to be allowed by Apple.
Apple released the option for digital billing only this month, which will be the only system capable of handling the subscription sales. Subscriptions will be available weekly, bi-monthly, monthly, quarterly, bi-yearly, or yearly.
Customers can manage any subscriptions by going to the personal account page. They will be able to cancel recurring billing there as well.
Apple is poised to earn 30% for each new subscriber to a specific app for each customer that they bring. If the publisher themselves initiates a new purchase, Apple will receive no commission.
Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, stated, “All we require is that, if a publisher is making a subscription offer outside of the app, the same (or better) offer be made inside the app, so that customers can easily subscribe with one-click right in the app. We believe that this innovative subscription service will provide publishers with a brand new opportunity to expand digital access to their content onto the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone, delighting both new and existing subscribers.”
