25 Sickened By Raw Clover Sprouts At Jimmy John’s In 8 States

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting that a total of 25 people have been infected with E. coli O26 in a total of eight states. The outbreak has possibly been traced back to raw clover sprouts served at Jimmy John’s sandwich restaurants.

Of the 25 known cases, 21 reported eating the sprouts at Jimmy John’s restaurants within seven days of becoming sick. Those reporting being sick said that the onset of their illness was between December 25, 2011 to February 15, 2012. Six of the people infected were hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported. The CDC said that any illnesses that began after February 19, 2012 might not be reported yet due to the time it takes for illnesses to be reported.

The states in which the outbreak has been reported are Michigan, Iowa, Missouri, Ohio, Kansas, Alabama, Arkansas and Wisconsin.

According to Food Safety News (FSN) this is the fifth time in four years that raw sprouts consumed at Jimmy John’s have been linked to similar outbreaks. Jimmy John’s has indicated it will no longer serve raw clover sprouts in its restaurants, according to FSN.
