The World Cup knock-out rounds continue today, and the Netherlands will be going up against Mexico for a place in the quarter finals.
The Netherlands are a strong contender for winning the tournament after reaching the final four years ago, and Dutch star Wesley Sneijder is clear he has the trophy in his sights.
“The beautiful thing about football is that you always have the chance to gain a bit of revenge” said Sneijder “Here we are four years later. And why can’t we win it this time? I think we have a great team and a great spirit, so we have to go for it.”
Mexico have exited the tournament at this stage in their last five World Cup campaigns, and coach Miguel Herrera will be looking to break that unfortunate tradition.
While there is no doubting that Mexico has a mountain to climb, they would face either Greece or Costa Rica in the quarter finals if they win.
Mexico is more than capable of winning either of those encounters, and it’s easy to see how a win against the Netherlands today could see them in the semis.
Mexico have so far shown a strong defensive line up, but it will need to be at the top of it’s game to frustrate the efforts of Robin van Persie.
The Netherlands look like the better team on paper, but there can be no doubt how much the Mexicans want this. If just a fraction of Herrera’s touchline enthusiasm has rubbed off on his team then we will have a real fight on our hands.
My prediction is that this one will go right down to the wire, with a narrow 2-1 win for the Netherlands.
Do you agree with my prediction, or do you think Mexico can beat the odds?
