VW Golf and GTI earn Top IIHS safety ratings

Two great cars just got better. The 2015, or seventh generation, of VW’s strong selling Golf and GTI models have been made all the more desirable  by achieving a top Safety Pick+ rating from the Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

To earn top marks these cars incorporate optional Forward Collision warning systems. Now using active and passive systems, the new Golf and GTI meet or exceed all current crash regulations.

Golf and GTI models offer Electronic Stability Control (ESC),  and six airbags as standard equipment. Optional equipment, includes Automatic Post-Collision Braking, Forward Collision Warning, and front and rear Park Distance Control systems.

VW loyalists needed no further incentive to consider these new models, but for those who may have overlooked the previous iterations of these vehicles, the new models can only gets more appealing.

On sale in August, the new Golf will come with 2 or 4 doors. You can opt for one of two engines, a 1.8L turbo direct-injection 4cyl. (TSI)  with either a 5 speed manual or 6 speed auto transmission; or for those who know the benefits, the 2.0L turbo Clean Diesel mated to either a 6 speed manual or a 6 speed DSG (dual-clutch automatic) transmission.

The TSI engine replaces the 2.5L from the previous generation and bests its fuel economy by 6 mpg, that represents a 20% increase. The TDI will get a claimed 35 mpg combined(city-highway), but owners will tell you they can get much more.

If you prefer to get where your going much faster the GTI can help. Available now, the GTI features a beefed up 2.0L turbo direct-injection engine that out performs  the last versions engine by 10 HP and a robust 51 lb-ft of torque. This engine can be paired with either a 6speed manual or a DSG with launch control.

Offering more power, better fuel economy, more standard equipment and technology, room for five average adults, more cargo space than any midsize sedan, and the solid well built German feel, the list of reasons not buy one of these just got a lot shorter.
