Trailers: Jupiter Ascending, Interstellar, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Having watched the trailers for Jupiter Ascending and Interstellar and watched the TV spot for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, one thing is for certain:

Hollywood is embracing originality.

Jupiter Ascending features galactic royalty and space-faring alien nations while still showing us a comfortable post-millenial America, which seems to make the grandiose scenes more harrowing, knowing the impact that they could have on an all-too-familiar Earth. The trailer leaves no doubt that the sheer spectacle will ensure at least a modest return on their investment.

Christopher Nolan loves to be enigmatic, but the trailer for Interstellar might be pushing it a bit. Interspersed between clips of stock footage ranging anywhere from the 40s through the 60s, the trailer hints at an immense leap forward in space traveling technology somewhere in the near future. This puts it on a much closer and personal frontier than Jupiter Ascending, and of course Christopher Nolan’s name will probably be enough to guarantee a sizeable profit, but there are only a handful of movies featuring space travel itself as the main theme that I can name offhand.

Okay, it’s just Apollo 13 and Gravity. But I have high hopes of course, as The Dark Knight solidified Nolan in my book of beloved directors of all time, so I am loathe to doubt any project of his, and if anyone can reimagine the entire modern concept of cosmic travel, it is Christopher Nolan.

The next installment in the Planet of the Apes reboot will be Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I had seen teasers earlier last year, but the TV spot simply puts forward the idea that because the newly-intelligent primates led by the charismatic and terrifying chimpanzee Caesar are stronger because they do not require things like electricity for their military power to be effective. This is, in my opinion, a brilliant concept to advertise, because today we are more plugged-in than ever and the consequent prophets of doom have been voicing serious doubts about the human species’ ability to survive if our power grids were suddenly lost.

All in all, three upcoming films with promises of incredible originality. I am quite excited, and I hope you are as well! Look for these films to come out in theaters at varying times this year, with the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes being the first, in July.
