The Closer: Mariano Rivera Disses Robinson Cano In New Book

After finishing off his Hall of Fame career last fall, it didn’t take long for former New York Yankees’ closer Mariano Rivera to come out with his autobiography, The Closer, which was released into book stores on Tuesday.

Among the topics covered in the book is Rivera’s affection for his former Yankee teammates.

However, Rivera does offer some criticism for a few of his former teammates, most notably Robinson Cano, who left the Yankees and signed with the Seattle Mariners this past offseason.

In the book, Rivera raves about Cano’s talent, but opines that his work ethic isn’t the best. Rivera writes, “I don’t think Robby burns to be the best,” adding “You don’t see that red-hot passion in him that you see in most elite players.”

Rivera takes it one step further and admits if he could choose a second baseman to play in a must-win game, he’d choose Dustin Pedroia of the rival Boston Red Sox over Cano.

He explains his reasoning, saying “Nobody plays harder, gives more, wants to win more. He comes at you hard for twenty-seven outs. It’s a special thing to see.”

What do you think about Rivera dissing his former teammate like that?

Are you excited to read the book and see what else Rivera has to say?
