Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation Review

Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation Review

After hearing that the Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation was being reformulated, I was desperate to find a new holy grail foundation.  Upon seeing Lex Fleming’s review of the Tarte Amazonian Clay foundation, ranting and raving about how perfect it is, I knew I had to give it a shot.

First impressions: you need more of it.  I was under the impression that it was a thick foundation, pushing past traditional full coverage.  However, when I use this foundation, I need about 1.5x the amount of the foundation than I do when using the Laura Mercier (the old formulation).

Second impressions (is that a thing?  It is now!): it is buildable.  There is no reason why you couldn’t get this foundation coverage up to extremely full.  You can build this coverage up to as thick or as thin as you want it to be, which, I think, is a great quality to have  in a foundation.

There are some pros and cons to buildable foundations.

Pro: they are buildable.  I know, that sounds silly.  But if you are like me, you have better skin days than others.  Some days, you just want a light coverage foundation to cover up the small amounts of scarring you might have.  Other days, you feel like yoru skin is covered in mountains and need something to smother on top.  With a buildable foundation, it can function as both.

Con: full coverage costs more.  While I have those summer days when I like a light coverage feel, for the most part, I tend to lean toward full coverage simply because I think it makes my skin look better.  That means I have to use more of this foundation than I would have to use of another foundation that is solely full coverage.  And this isn’t a cheap foundation ($39 for 1.17 ounces).

Another pro to this foundation is that it has an SPF of 15 build into the foundation.

Overall, I do think that this foundation is a great purchase for the right kind of skin type and makeup user.  If you want a medium to full coverage foundation that will be buildable, this is a really great choice.  Surprisingly, it’s one of the less expensive options, giving you the most for your money.

The Tarte Amazonian Clay can be found where Tarte products are sold.
