Takata Airbag Recall Grows As GM & Subaru Add Almost 400,000 Cars To Recall List

The Takata airbag recall continues to take on a life of its own. GM and Subaru have added almost 400,000 cars to this ever-growing problem.

Initially GM had only some Toyota-built Pontiac Vibes on the list, but now they have included 330,198 heavy-duty pickups; these are the 1st GM built models that have been added.

The new models from General Motors are the 2007–2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500, along with the GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 twins, which will all require new passenger-side front airbags.

Subaru, meanwhile, had initially included some Saabs on the list, but has now expanded their list to include the following: 2004–2005 Impreza models (which already included the WRX and WRX STI models of that same year), the 2003–2005 Baja, Legacy, and Outback, and more 2005 Saab 9-2X wagons (an Impreza and WRX clone).

Takata issued the initial recall because it was discovered that the air bag inflators can explode with too much force, spewing shrapnel into the passenger compartment; the cause is believed to be from overexposure to moisture and humidity.

This is the 3rd time in nearly 3 weeks that car makers have added cars to the list, which has grown from 34 million to nearly 55 million and counting.

The Takata Recall Website, created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, serves as a lookup to find cars that are subject to this recall.

You can enter your car’s VIN (vehichle identification number) there to see if it is a part of the recall; your car’s VIN can be found on your registration or a plate visible on the windshield of the car.

What do you think of this recall expanding once again?

Do you think there are more recalls still to come?
