Super Smash Bros. Release Date, New Features, Modes, Characters!

Nintendo has revealed in its latest Nintendo Direct video a plethora of announcements including new characters, stages, a release window and a game mode called “Smash Run” for Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS.

The series creator, Masahiro Sakurai, announced that Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS is expected to release during the summer. The Wii U version will follow during the winter 2014.

Both versions will be available in retail and on their respective Nintendo eShop, but no specific dates have been given.

Greninja, the final evolution of Froakie from Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, will be a playable character in the game.

Another fan favorite Pokémon, Charizard, will also be playable, but not as part of the Pokémon Trainer character, whom will not be returning from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Instead, Charizard will have a Final Smash where it evolves into Mega Charizard.

Lucario, also a returning character from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, will have a Final Smash where he evolves into his Mega form.

Other changes include the elimination of all transformations from characters’ movesets. As such, Samus and Zelda will not have transformations but their alternate forms, Zero Suit Samus and Sheik, will return as separate playable characters not unlike Link and Toon link.

Yoshi will also return with a new look reflecting his new “upright” appearance rather than his classical hunched look.

The 3DS version of the game will run at a smooth 60 fps, even while played in stereoscopic 3D. It will also have an exclusive “Smash Run” mode where up to four players have five minutes to explore a dungeon and collect upgrades to prepare for a battle arena phase after the timer runs out.

Multiple Nintendo 3DS systems and games are required for multiplayer modes.

Online multiplayer will be featured in both versions of the game. Two modes will be available when playing against strangers: “For Fun” and “For Glory”. In “For Glory,” only Final Destination stage variations of stages are available. There are no platforms, raised areas or items. In “For Fun,” all stages are picked randomly and all items and power-ups are available.

Nintendo also confirmed that boss characters such as the Yellow Devil in the Wily Castle stage will appear acting as an extra stage hazard that can be beaten while continuing the fight against other players.

Nintendo has also hinted at more features such as custom move sets and that the 3DS and Wii U games will link together somehow, but hasn’t provided any details about those features as of publishing.
