So What’s Up With Google’s New Nexus Player?

Google has announced the release of its new puck-shaped console, the Nexus Player – effectively joining the battle in the gaming console -slash-media player arena.

Here is quick rundown of what the Nexus Player has to offer:

• Android Lollipop 5.0 modded to play nice with large TV screens
• Android TV which makes recommendations and responds to voice commands
• Google Cast to stream video from other Android or iOS devices to the TV
• Full integration with the Google Play Store
• Syncing with other Android devices using your account credentials

So how about the hardware that comes with the console? Here’s what you can expect to find inside and along with the Nexus Player:

• 1.8GHz Quad Core, Intel Atom processor
• PowerVR Series 6 GPU
• 8 GB internal storage
• 1 GB RAM
• 802.11ac 2×2 (MIMO) WiFi connectivity
• Remote control with built-in voice search function
• HDMI-out
• Gamepad (sold separately)

The Nexus Player is priced at $99 with the gamepad at $40, and can be pre-ordered on the Google Play Store on October 17.

There is no news yet on the final release date of the Nexus Player, though it is expected to be out in time for the holiday season.
