In September, we reported that the CPSC issued a warning pertaining to certain models of top-load Samsung washing machines.
Last Friday, the company issued an official recall. It came after more than 730 cases of exploding washing machines, resulting in at least nine injuries, including a broken jaw and an injured shoulder.
The issue pertains to certain top-load washing machines with rear or mid-controls. When doing heavy loads, the washers vibrate aggressively, causing the top part to come off.
The recall affects 2.8 million units from 34 different models, sold between March 2011 and November 2016.
Samsung is offering a number of refund options. If you have a model with rear controls, you can get a free in-home repair and a new one-year warranty for your washer.
Regardless of whether you have a model with rear or mid-controls, you can get a rebate towards the purchase of a new washer from Samsung (in which case you will get a loyalty incentive of up to $150 towards your purchase) or another brand, along with free removal of the old washer and installation of the new one.
If you purchased an affected washer within 30 days prior to last Friday, you are eligible for a full refund from your place of purchase.
In addition, all known customers will receive a Home Label Kit in the mail with a new control panel guide (for rear controls) and additional safety instructions.
To check if your washing machine is affected, enter your model and serial numbers, which you can find on the back of your washer, on the bottom of this page.
Until you have replaced or repaired your washer or installed a Home Label Kit, the CPSC is advising consumers to use only the delicate or waterproof cycles when washing bedding or water-resistant and bulky items.
