A 35 year old man in Central California was killed at a cockfight on Monday, according to local officials. The culprit: an armed rooster.
The victim, Jose Luis Ochoa, who only last year had faced fines for charges of owning and training an animal for fighting purposes, was rushed to a hospital after receiving the injury, where he was declared dead only two hours later.
The cause of death was a “sharp force injury,” incurred when the bird kicked Ochoa in the calf with a knife that was attached to the it’s leg.
The sport of cockfighting is illegal in many countries, including the United States, and involves selectively bred roosters that fight in a ring to the death. They are often outfitted with knives, blades, and spikes.
It is a misdemeanor to take part in a cockfight in any way, whether through organization or attendance. Second offense is a felony charge.
Officials are unclear if the death was the result of a delay in medical treatment. Sgt. Martin King, who has been with the sheriff’s department for 24 years, said, “I have never seen this type of incident.”
There were no arrests made at the cockfight where the incident occurred.
