Project Fi Now Offering $5/Month Smartphone Insurance On Fi Phones

Google’s Project Fi is now offering “device protection” on phones purchased through Project Fi.

Project Fi is Google’s new, cheap, smartphone service. Users get unlimited calls and texts for $20/month. Data is available at $10/GB, with a credit applied each month for unused data.

Project Fi works on Nexus 5x, 6 and 6P phones. These phones can be financed through Project Fi.

Protect your Nexus 5X or 6P from drops, cracks, and spills with device protection, now available for devices purchased from Project Fi.

With device protection, you can quickly get your phone replaced in the event of:

  • Accidental damage (including drops, cracks, and spills)

  • Mechanical breakdown (beyond the 1-year manufacturer’s warranty period)

Enroll your phone for $5/month. A deductible will apply for device protection replacements ($69 for Nexus 5X, $99 for 6P).

If you’ve already purchased a Nexus 5X or 6P from Project Fi, log on to fi.google.com to enroll your device for a limited time. If you’re purchasing a new Nexus 5X or 6P from Project Fi, you can enroll during checkout or up to 30 days after shipment. Be sure to activate Project Fi service within this time window.

  • In an email we received from Project Fi this morning, they included more info on the coverage:

    ——————-

Each enrolled device is covered for up to 2 incidents of accidental damage in any rolling 12-month period. Loss and theft are not covered under device protection. Please see the sample terms and conditions for complete details, exclusions, and limitations.

Users that purchased their Nexus 5x or 6P phones from the Google Play Store instead of Project Fi are not eligible for the Project Fi device protection. Phones purchased from the Play Store are eligible for Nexus Protect at the time of purchase. Rather than $5/month, Nexus Protect costs $69 for Nexus 5X, $89 for Nexus 6P, for two years of coverage.

The difference in price between Project Fi device protection ($5/month over two years would be $120) and the cost of Nexus Protect, and the limitation of which insurance is available based on whether the phone was purchased from the Google Play Store or Project Fi, has stirred some controversy over on the Project Fi Help Forum.

Will you be purchasing the $5/month Project Fi device protection?

Overall, do you think smartphone insurance is a good idea?
