Pizza Hut To Drop Artificial Pizza Ingredients By July

Pizza Hut has announced it will drop unhealthy ingredients, such as artificial flavors and colors, from its pizzas by the end of July.

An allergen tool and interactive nutrition calendar will also debut on Pizza Hut’s website and mobile app in July. The tools will allow customers to select items and customize the menu more to their specific needs.

Pizza Hut says it’s the first national chain devoted to removing artificial colors and flavors from its pizzas.

The company has devoted more than a year to working with its suppliers to develop a healthier menu while preserving the same flavors customers are accustomed to with the brand.

Some of the changes have already taken place. For example, artificial trans fats and partially hydrogenated oils, as well as MSG, have already been eliminated from Pizza Hut’s ingredients.

Sodium has already been reduced in the chain’s pizzas and by the end of the year, “15 percent of Pizza Hut pizzas will have just one third of the daily recommended dietary allowance for sodium and 20 percent of its pizzas will meet that criteria by 2020,” according to the company.

Pizza Hut also claims there are no fillers in any of its meat toppings; its meatballs are free of artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives; U.S. farmers source its natural Italian sausage; its cheese comes from 100 percent whole milk mozzarella; and no sugar or oil is added to its pizza marinara sauce.

Other already established healthier items on Pizza Hut’s menu include Udi’s Gluten-Free pizza and the “Skinny” slice pizzas that offer 250 calories or less per slice.
