Nintendo has set the date for the US launch of the Nintendo 3DS, it’s new game system on which games can be played in 3D without any special glasses or eyewear.
The game system, previously released in Japan, is being hailed as a whole new gaming experience. According to Reggie Fils-Aime, users on a Nintendo 3DS “…can play 3D video games and take 3D pictures, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The 3D display is amazing in its own right,” he continued, “but just as compelling are the new forms of game play it delivers, and the groundbreaking ways it will connect players to new content … and each other.”
The official US release of the Nintendo 3DS is to take place at midnight on the evening of March 26/27, 2011.
A big party is being planned for 9pm to midnight March 26 at the Best Buy store in New York City’s Union Square. Shoppers will be provided demos, food, music and givaways in the build up to the official midnight launch.
Other Best Buy stores that will be open at midnight include San Francisco and West Hollywood in California; Dadeland and Millenia Mall in Florida; Butterfield Road, in Illinois; Richfield, in Minnesota; Westbury, in New York; Oxford Valley, in Pennsylvania; Galleria, in Texas; and Bellevue, in Washington; according to Best Buy’s website, bestbuy.com.
Gamestop will also be having special store hours at many of its locations. They will be opening doors at select locations at 10pm on March 26 and will begin selling Nintendo 3DS systems at midnight. They warn that lines may form early. A list Gamestop stores opening in local regions is posted on their site, gamestop.com, under ‘events’.
