New Top Gear Show on Netflix?

New Top Gear Show on Netflix?

As soon as the BBC announced the cancellation of Top Gear, fans have been desperate to get it back on the air. They may be in luck as rumours have surfaced claiming the presenters are in talks to film a show for Netflix.

According to The Mirror UK, Jeremy Clarkson and co-stars James May and Richard Hammond will team up with former executive producer Andy Willman. The BBC owns the name Top Gear, but sources say the new show could be called House of Cars, an obvious nod to the popular Netflix political drama, House of Cards.

Early speculation suggested that the battle to sign the controversial team was between ITV and Netflix. It is now believed that ITV is no longer in the running due to the fact it relies on advertising money. If GM were to have a sponsorship deal and Clarkson gave their new vehicle a bad review, it could cause a lot of headaches for the network. Netflix use a user subscription model, and therefore should not encounter the same kind of issues.

This situation would suit Clarkson who doesn’t like being told what to do. After being publicly criticized on several occasions, he was finally dismissed by the BBC this past March following a “fracas” with one of Top Gear’s producers.

Top Gear was one of the world’s most popular shows as it was watched in more than 100 countries and generated around £50 million for the BBC Worldwide last year. The BBC has said it will continue the show, just with new presenters.

What do you think about Clarkson and co moving to Netflix? Would you watch the new show?
