Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies have announced a Feb. 6, 2015 release date for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.

This is the sequel to 2004’s The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, which was a box office hit, earning more than $84 million in the U.S. alone. The story involves a pirate who discovers a magical book that will make all his evil plans come true. However, he needs the final page of that book to make it work, and that page rests in Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob and his friends must prevent the pirate and his crew from gaining access to that page.

Sponge Out of Water marks a slight change in the SpongeBob format. While early scenes are done with traditional animation, the characters eventually come out of the sea and into the above-ground world, where they are computer-animated and inserted into live-action sequences. Human actors also appear in the film, with Antonio Banderas portraying the lead pirate. Additionally, the movie will be presented in 3D.

A newly-released trailer shows SpongeBob, Patrick, and the others muscling up to become superheroes. It additionally gives a flavor of the film’s humor and playful use of the 3D format.

Fans of this franchise will be glad to know that Sponge Out of Water was directed by Paul Tibbitt, a long-time writer/producer of the SpongeBob SquarePants TV series. Tibbitt developed the story with SpongeBob creator Stephen Hillenburg, while the screenplay was penned by Glenn Berger and Jonathan Aibel, who previously wrote Kung Fu Panda and Monsters vs. Aliens.
