Apple revealed their new MacBook laptop yesterday.

The new MacBook has been completely redesigned and reengineered from the inside out and will keep Apple ahead of the industry pace.

“Every year for last decade, Mac has outgrown the industry,” said Cook. Notebook sales of Mac grew 21% over the last year while numbers fell across the industry.

Cook unveiled the new Mac notebook by joking it’s so light he can’t even feel it.

“It took reinventing every technology in it to deliver something this amazing,” Cook said. “It weighs just two pounds. This is the lightest Mac we have ever made. At its thickest point it’s 13.1mm and it’s the thinnest MacBook we’ve ever made.”

The new MacBook will begin shipping April 10, 2015. Pricing starts at $1299 for a 12-inch Retina display, 1.1 GHz dual-core Intel Core M processor, 8 GB memory, and 256 GB of flash storage or $1599 for a 1.2 GHz processor and 512GB of flash storage.

The previous thinnest MacBook was the 11-inch Macbook Air at 17.3mm.

The new Macbook is 24% thinner and the first fanless MacBook ever, so it’s also quieter.

It comes in three colors: Silver, Space Gray, and Gold.

The new MacBook’s Retina display features 2304 by 1440 pixels. That’s over 3 million pixels in a 12-inch Retina display– the thinnest ever built by Mac. The display has been reengineered to allow more light through, while using 30% less energy. Yet it remains as bright as previous Mac retina displays.

The new full-size keyboard is a redesign that spans the entire width of the notebook and boasts a new butterfly mechanism under the keys. The keys are built with a single assembly supported by a stainless dome switch, versus the old scissor mechanism. This makes the keys four times more stable with a 17% larger surface area.

In addition, each key has its own LED, so the entire keyboard glows for use in the dark.

A new, adjustable trackpad that can be tweaked to a stiffer or softer feel also arrives with the MacBook.

Force click is a new gesture to take advantage of the more sensitive trackpad. Force click can automatically create calendar events, preview files, fast forward quicker, and more. For example, force clicking on an address can bring up the location on a map.

New battery technology has been developed to fit the new MacBook’s shape. Terraced batteries allow up to 9 hours of wireless web browsing and 10 hours of iTunes movie playback watch. Apple is calling it “all-day” battery life.

On the downside, the new MacBook also means more new chargers and cables to buy– it uses a USB-C port which allows five ports in one. On the plus side, the cable end can be inserted with either side up or down, so no more fumbling in the dark to get the right side up.

Apple also notes the new MacBook’s environmentally-friendly features such as arsenic-free display glass, mercury-free display, and PVC-free.  It claims the EPA has designated it “the world’s most energy-efficient notebook.”
