Murphy Farm Alfalfa Hay & Western Blend Horse Feed Recalled

Murphy Farm Alfalfa Hay & Western Blend Horse Feed Recalled

Murphy Farm Hay and Feed Company and Western Milling LLC have voluntarily recalled products in the past week due to presence of cantharidin and potential monensin contamination, respectively.

Murphy Farm Hay and Feed Company – located in Louisburg, NC – has voluntarily recalled a select load of alfalfa hay due to a potential Blister Beetle contamination.

The recalled lot contains 70-pound square bales of alfalfa that are wrapped in red-orange twine and were sold at Murphy Farm Hay and Feed in Louisburg, NC, and Jones Farm Hay and Feed in Middlesex, NC.

Blister Beetles have a poisonous substance called cantharidin, which can kill cattle, goats, sheep, and horses, though horses are most susceptible. Signs that your animal has been poisoned by a Blister Beetle include bloody urine, colic, dehydration, depression, diarrhea, elevated temperature, increased heart rate, inflammation, and straining.

Western Milling LLC has voluntarily recalled 50-pound bags of Western Blend Horse Feed, LOT# 5251, that were manufactured on September 8, 2015 due to a potential monensin contamination.

Western Milling LLC recalled the food after realizing an ingredient in the food may contain monensin – an ionophore – which will lead to ionophore poisoning.

The severity of ionophore poisoning varies depending on the amount digested, but horse owners should be aware of the following symptoms: colic, depression, diarrhea, decreased will to exercise, decreased appetite, labored breathing, rapid heart rate, sweating, weakness, and wobbly gait. Sudden death is also common with ionophore poisoning.

Do these recalls affect your stable?

After the stretch of cat and dog food recalls last month, will farm animal foods following the same pattern?
