Microsoft to End Windows 7 Support

Microsoft to End Windows 7 Support

Microsoft is planning to end mainstream support of Windows 7 on January 13th, 2015.

Anyone with Windows 7 will no longer receive design updates, new features, service packs, or performance improvements for your OS.

This applies to all versions of Windows 7. However, even after support ends, Microsoft will release necessary security patches for the OS until 2020.

Luckily, users that have “extended support” will continue to receive up dates for an additional 5 years, or until January 14th, 2020.

There is some speculation as to whether Microsoft will end up extending support for Windows 7 like they did with XP. It would make sense due to popularity of Windows 7, but Microsoft more than likely wants more users to jump onto the Windows 8 platform.

Microsoft also released a date to end support for Windows 8 in 2018. Since Windows 8 was released toward end of 2013, this is a rather short lifespan for the OS when compared to XP (2001-2009) and Windows 7 (2009-2015).

What do you think of Microsoft’s decision to end Windows 7 support? Are you going to get Windows 8?
